- Points 0
Learning Objectives
- Define and illustrate the primary characteristics of open educational practices.
- Identify concrete examples of OEP and evaluate their suitability for different communities of practice and modes of learning as well as limitations and challenges to their effectiveness.
- Begin to analyze the connection between OEP and related values-based practices such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Lambert’s framework for social justice.
Assignment Overview
Our first activity of this module will be to collaboratively annotate Bali et. al 2020 Framing Open Educational Practices from a Social Justice Perspective Links to an external site. using Hypothes.is.
Hypothes.is is a powerful tool that can be used as an open educational practice. Any website can be annotated by anyone that has a Hypothes.is account. One of my favorite examples of a public conversation on an article can be found here: But You Can’t Do That in a STEM course! by Karen Cangliaosi Links to an external site. (the annotations are accessible once you’ve made an account—instructions below). This is one way that open educational practices can allow instructors to utilize traditionally published materials in new and different ways.
We will be using Hypothes.is within a private group setting, one to create a safe space of only our participants, and two to allow you to access those annotations beyond the completion of the course. Hypothes.is can also be seamlessly incorporated into learning management systems for use in classrooms. Feel free to use our cohort group to annotate other articles assigned—it is not required, but we can all see every annotation made to any article on our group home page.
Guidelines
- First, you will need to set up a Hypothes.is account here, or if you already have an account, join the OEP 2024 cohort group here: 2024 OEP Cohort

- Read the article, make comments, ask questions. We ask that your initial thoughts are recorded by the first Thursday in the module, and any responses you have to other participants are recorded by the Thursday of week 2. Of course, this is merely a guideline for participation - feel free to reply to annotations already posted on your initial read through as well.
- Please make constructive annotations. While the occasional “I totally agree!” is fine, the majority of your comments should build upon the comments of others, make connections between [this article] and the other resources this week/last week, and ask relevant questions.
- We are not going to require a specific number of posts - we just would like you to engage with the article as is relevant to you. For some people this is an annotation or two, for others this is a stream of annotations.
Assessment
Your learning within this module will be assessed through your Hypothes.is annotations of the assigned article.
