- Assess and update your educational materials to support student agency and choice.
Assignment Overview
As you reflect upon the resources read and viewed for this module and how you may apply them to the renewable assignments you will incorporate into your course, think about how you can build structures and practices that support student agency and choice, particularly as it relates to ownership of their work and honoring students' lives, their backgrounds, identities, experiences, motivations, and goals.

Guidelines
- How will you incorporate student choice into your OEP project?
- Will they get to choose topics? Tools? Deliverables?
- Students need to understand copyright, fair use, and Creative Commons licenses in order to produce artifacts that are renewable and reflective of their lived experiences while also maintaining their autonomy over their intellectual property - how will you address this in your project?
- Consider the implications for your course - example: do you have time to dedicate a whole class session to a copyright and CC workshop?
- Will you collaborate together to do a workshop, or will the instructor or librarian conduct the workshop themselves? Could you address it as an out-of-class module?
- How will you address your students’ choices re: privacy and openness? In some instances, instructors allow students to determine how they want to participate in the open by allowing them to choose licenses or not to share publicly at all. In other cases, instructors do require the work to be published, but allow students to choose how their authorship is recognized - either with their name or under a pseudonym or anonymous. This consideration is wholly dependent on the context of the assignment and your particular course and discipline.
- How will your students be able incorporate their lived experiences into the OEP projects?
- How will you place value on scholarship outside of peer-reviewed literature?
- Look back to Lambert’s framework of social justice. Which of the three types of justice could be advanced with this project and how?
Assessment
This activity will be assessed through completion of the six questions on the Certificate in OEP Action Plan Planning Document and through completion of the questions on the Self Assessment.
