Module 3, Critical Considerations for Using OER/OEP Overview (2 weeks)

Learning Objectives

  • Use critical and diverse lenses to consider the potential limitations of OER/OEP.
  • Use appropriate OER/OEP tools.
  • Develop instruction with appropriate OER/OEP tools.
  • Identify roles for librarians and other support staff in OEP development.
  • Consider potential collaborations with various stakeholders for OER/OEP, including librarians, faculty, and students.

Overview

Increased access to higher education means a much more representative body of students is attending college. To meet the needs of the more diverse student population, motivated faculty are adjusting and reorienting their curricular practices and moving past some traditional pedagogical approaches in higher education. As a result, open educational practices are gaining momentum.

The open practices you explore in this course are foundational to addressing concerns of social justice and the inclusion of all students.  You will create learning opportunities that authentically support students and significantly benefit their learning and success. You will explore best practices and tools for our learning environments. As we consider how to implement new practices, we should be critically aware of how these practices operate in our classrooms and programs, and their limitations, including who they might advantage or disadvantage. As we carefully consider the benefits and limitations of OER and OEP, we will work to tap into a wider network of learning professionals who are similarly committed to equity and inclusivity in education.
