Understanding Global Cultures Textbook Cover

Read Textbook

PART IX: INDIA, TRADITION, MODERNITY, AND DIVERSITY

Ch. 26: India: The Dance of Shiva

Ch. 27: India: A Kaleidoscope of Diversity

  • Textbook Guiding Prompt

    • India, like China, is one of the largest, most populous, politically and economically influential countries in the world. And it has been for thousands of years. Also like China, India is large and powerful enough to merit two cultural metaphors in Understanding Global Cultures, "India:The Dance of Shiva" and "India: A Kaleidoscope of Diversity".

    • Pay attention to how those two cultural metaphors are the same, and how they are different, and how--taken together--they represent the people of India and their cultures.

    •  When you are finished reading these chapters, you should understand the cultural metaphors of India and how they represent the country and its "kaleidoscope" of people.

    • And you should understand the cultural, social, historical, political, and economic importance and outreach of India, the numerically largest and one of the dominant cultures of the world, past and present.

    • Finally, and importantly, you should come away with some understanding of what life is like for individuals and their families who live in India, and are members of the country's' "kaleidoscope" of people.
