PART IV: OTHER EGALITARIAN CULTURES

Pick at least one of the Modern-day Latin American cultures with a musical metaphor . . .

Ch. 36: The Brazilian Samba

Ch. 37: The Argentine Tango

  • Textbook Guiding Prompt

    • As usual, be sure you understand the cultural metaphors for Brazil and Argentina, and the specific reasons Gannon and Pillai chose music--the Samba and the Tango--to represent these two South American countries.

      • Compare these two chapters with Ch. 21 "The Mexican Fiesta". There can be no Mexican Fiesta without Mariachi music.

        • Why is Mariachi music not the cultural metaphor of Mexico?

        • Why is Basso Nova not the cultural metaphor of Brazil?

        • The Tango for Argentina, it seems, is "spot on".

      • If you were going to choose a music metaphor for the U.S.A., what would it be? What would be the features of the metaphor? And why?

      • And looking ahead to next week, how do reggae, calypso, and merengue fit into the cultures of the Caribbean?

    • When you are finished reading the chapters on Brazil and Argentina, and comparing them to Mexico and the Caribbean, you should understand the metaphors well enough to explain them--and their importance to the Brazilians and Argentines--to the middle-aged males sitting next to you at next year's Minnesota state boys' high school hockey tournament.
