PART XII: SAME METAPHOR, DIFFERENT MEANINGS

Ch. 34: The Spanish Bullfight

Ch. 35: The Portuguese Bullfight

  • Textbook Guiding Prompt

    • The art of La Corrida de Toros, "Bullfighting" in the vernacular, symbolizes Spain and things Spanish. To Gannon and Pillai it also is the metaphor for Portugal, as they explore two different countries and cultures with the same cultural metaphor. "Bullfighting" is, they say, the "Same Metaphor, Different Meanings".

      • Read the chapters on Spain and Portugal, carefully comparing and contrasting in terms of the distinctions Gannon and Pillai make in making the case for the same metaphor for both countries.

    • When you are finished reading these chapters, you should understand the metaphors and how the same metaphor can represent two countries/cultures, and be able to explain that--and the significance and importance of "bullfighting" to large numbers of Portuguese and Spanish citizens--to your friend or neighbor who is a strict Vegan and the local Chair of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

      • You should be able to explain the basic "Bullfighting" metaphor.

      • You should be able to explain the basic similarities (comparison).

      • You should be able to explain the basic differences (contrast).

      • You should be able to explain the fundamental anthropological concept of "CULTURAL RELATIVISM" (Cf. --GC Wk6 View Slides: "Other Important Terms").

      • You should also be able to explain your personal position on whether females should be allowed to be a matadora (toreras), articulating your explanation using what you have learned about the cultures and cultural metaphors of Portugal and Spain using both from EMIC and ETIC points of view.
