Step 1. Setting Expectations about Academic Integrity
The first step of a course assessment plan is setting assessment expectations. We strongly encourage you to define and communicate to your students how you as an instructor are going to monitor and assess student learning. Students also have a responsibility to help you ensure course assessments are valid by following academic integrity policies, adhering to the Honor Code, and fulfilling course expectations in terms of quality of student work.
We recommend that instructors:
- Provide and make sure students are familiarized with the Honor Code. Here are a few examples:
- Outline student responsibilities for their own learning in the course syllabus.
- Explain and discuss rules and expectations for course assignments and activities.
- Remind students of confidentiality obligations.
- Share privacy and security notices, if any.
- Define authorized behaviors.
- Have students complete the Honor Agreement for high stakes assessment.
- Make sure students are aware of the consequences for engaging in unauthorized behavior.
