Individual Modeling Project: Turbine and Centrifugal Pump
- Due No Due Date
- Points 0
Purpose
This project will demonstrate your skill and proficiency in using SolidWorks in creating a turbine and centrifugal pump.
Setting
Consider yourself to be employed as an engineer for a firm that searches for nostalgic or historical machine drawings and reconditions the information to make a complete data package for anyone to produce a working version.
This is your assignment
Take the available information provided to you and make a complete package according to your training. Your customer for this “deliverable” is the owner of the company who likes to review every package before allowing it to go on sale. The typical customer thinks they are buying the following:
- A complete set of drawings that describe each part and each assembly. The information needs to be complete enough to successfully fabricate and assemble everything.
- A written description of the function of the machine, its utility and limitations.
- A description of any safety concerns regarding the machine. Are there any limits to operation?
- A picture showing the completed unit with the dimensions correctly labeled.
All of this should be organized and able to be printed to provide a package worthy of sale to the public.
Requirements
Here is a description of the required items for this project that you will turn in.
- All parts must be accurately modeled and assembled in SolidWorks. Represent threads by using the Cosmetic Threads. Render out a view of your finished assembly using various lines, shading, coloring, etc. as you see fit so as to clearly represent your final work. Save this rendered picture as a pdf or picture file (.jpg or .png).
- All parts and assemblies will be represented on drawings complete with views, section cuts, assembly explosions, dimensions, etc. to enable a manufacturer to make this pump. If a sub-assembly would be helpful for visualizing how this machine goes together feel free to do it. Save your drawings as .pdf files.
- Use a “B” size drawing format within SolidWorks for your drawing space. Three sheets are the most commonly used to fully describe all parts and features.
- A Bill of Material (BOM) is the ‘shopping list’ for anyone that wishes to fabricate and assemble the product. The BOM is a complete list of all the parts and materials that will be used to construct the assembly (or subassembly). Be certain to include everything required to perform this assembly. This includes bulk material items such as thread seal, lubricant, adhesive, etc. Don’t miss anything! The BOM is placed on the first sheet of the drawing typically on the right hand side.
- A two page or less report that discusses potential failure locations and how to resolve them as well as how the turbine will functionally work. This will be submitted in either a .docx or .pdf file.
Make this report easy to read, easy to decipher data, and, most of all, usable for making one of these pumps. Your grade is based on how well these requirements are met AND how nice the data package looks.
What are you handing in?
- One picture that was saved in pdf or picture format (jpg, tiff, png) that is rendered and represents the entire assembly.
- One drawing package in pdf format complete with all information, dimensions, views, sections, Bill of material, notes, version, name and title, etc. that are standard for a complete drawing data package.
- A no more than two page document discussing the design and functionality of the turbine -centrifugal pump as well as any end user safety concerns of the turbine - centrifugal pump.
All 3 of these items must be uploaded onto Canvas for each part. For example the image of the turbine will be turned into the "Turbine - Centrifugal Pump Image" Assignment.

NOTE: In the drawings for all instances where parts are sized at 5/16-40 choose 5/16-24 instead and make sure fasteners match dimensions.
