Surrogacy Legislation
There is a push for surrogacy laws to be introduced in Ireland. At the current time, there are no laws in Ireland in regards to surrogacy. The surrogate parents must apply for guardianship, which can take up to two years. In the time that they do not have guardianship, they cannot make medical decisions or other legal actions for the child. This has led to people going abroad to countries where surrogacy laws exist. There is another problem with this, however, as if the surrogate is not Irish, the child is not entitled to Irish citizenship.
