Learning Objective

  • Articulate a definition of open education, open educational resources (OER), and open educational practices (OEP).

Assignment Overview

In order to ensure that we are all on the same page in terms of foundational definitions of OER and OEP, you will watch one resource, read a few others and then complete the first part of the OEP Action Plan Template in Google Docs Links to an external site.. The template has been shared with you. In order to make a copy, you will need to go to the File menu and use the drop-down to choose Make a Copy. Faculty and librarian pairs will work together on their Action Plan draft throughout the course. You may draft your action plan in a single shared document for your pair (making it clear who wrote what) or in separate copies. Regardless, both team members submit your Action Plan(s) using the "Share" link within your respective assignment submission areas.

Note: In order to submit your completed portion of the Action Plan each week, click on the "Start Assignment" box and then post the "Share" link for your Google Doc. Please use the following permission setting: Anyone with the link can comment.

 Guidelines

  2. In order to gain an understanding of the benefits and challenges of OER, please read Open Educational Resources (OER): OER Benefits/Challenges Links to an external site..
  3. Next, please read the brief Open Educational Practices and Pedagogies Links to an external site. for a foundational overview of the principles of open education and open pedagogy.

As we attempt to ground everything we do upon the principles of social justice, please read a foundational article that ties open education and social justice together by Sarah Lambert entitled, "Changing our (Dis)course: A Distinctive Social Justice Aligned Definition of Open Education." Links to an external site.
  5. In order to reflect upon what you just watched and read about OER and OEP, please make a copy of the OEP Action Plan Links to an external site. by going to "File" (under the title of the document) and then clicking on “Make a copy.” Please save this document as you will be going back to it throughout this online course.

 Assessment

The readings from this module will be assessed through your answers to the Module 1 OEP Action Plan questions and through your completion of the Self Assessment at the end of this module. Your cohort leader will be reviewing these answers and providing feedback as appropriate.
